Pilates is well known these days and certainly many of today’s celebrities are keen Pilates exercisers. Such celebrities often visit Pilates classes to keep in shape and we can see this from their toned bodies that grace the cover of magazines. Celebrities love Pilates as it works on strength and balance and is a low impact and highly achievable form of exercise.

Pilates is a great way to keep toned but it also aids in a wide range of different fields like sport injury prevention, stretching the right muscles to improve any athletic performance, strengthening the body for birth in prenatal or pregnancy exercises, recovering from birth with postnatal Pilates, weight loss, increasing mobility in old age, relaxation and much more.

Unfortunately, most of us are not like celebrities, and don’t have a bank account that enables us to have nannies to look after our kids and chefs to cook our dinners while we attend private Pilates lessons. So the next best thing available to us is to buy a Pilates exercise DVD, so we can practice the wonderful exercise of Pilates from the comfort of our own homes. A DVD for Pilates is a great addition to a Pilates home equipment collection.

As illustrated, Pilates can help overcome pretty much any sport injury or aid positively in any exercise we can think of. So to is there also a Pilates exercise DVD available to buy on pretty much any topic you can dream of.

A Beginners Pilates DVD will generally concentrate on the 6 core Pilates principles of centering, concentration, control, precision, breath and flow. Beginners Pilates DVDs generally contain non advanced exercises and this would be the best Pilates DVD to buy if you have had no prior Pilates experience.

For those that are more advanced and have had previous exposure to Pilates, there are DVDs that can be purchased for intermediate exercises as well as more advanced exercises for those that have been practicing for a while. An intermediate or Advanced Pilates DVD may include more difficult exercises or the use of some Pilates Home Equipment.

Other than general Pilates Exercise DVDs, there are then a range of Pilates exercise DVDs you can buy that will concentrate on Pilates for achieving a specific goal, like tightening the middle core, pregnancy and pre natal Pilates, post natal Pilates, Pilates on an exercise ball, Pilates for pain reduction or the super Pilates toning for your abs and buts. Following on from these specific exercise types, there are also Pilates DVDs available to buy for many of the Pilates Home Equipment currently available like the Pilates Magic Circle, the Aero Pilates Machine, the Stamina Aero Pilates Machines and many more. Also the popular types of Pilates regimes like Stott Pilates and Winsor Pilates, also have a range of DVDs for their specific Pilates techniques.

The list of available DVDs one can buy to practice pilates from home is endless. You can be assured a DVD is available on almost any topic that you want to concentrate on. To buy a Pilates DVD, just visit your favorite online DVD store and make use of their search features to find what DVDs are currently available. Most reputable online DVD stores have great descriptions for their products, which means even if the word you are searching isn’t in the title, it will show up in the synopsis of the DVD.

Just make sure that when buying a Pilates DVD online that you ensure the DVD is formatted to your country zone, to save disappointment of the DVD not working. Although DVDs are normally shipped inexpensively around the world, as they are so light, just check the cost of the shipping and see if it is worthwhile to buy mulitple DVDs at once. Another point to consider when you want to buy a quality Pilates DVD, is to check the length of the DVD and how many different topics or exercises it covers.

Back Pain Relief With Stott Pilates

July 27, 2009 by RLuve

If you’ve never heard of Stott Pilates, you may want to to look into it in order to find some back pain relief. Back pain can be dangerous to your overall health.

There are hundreds of licensed chiropractors that whole heartily recommend Stott Pilates to their patients with sore backs. As long as you practice correctly, Pilates can really help in eliminating back pain.

Why does Stott Pilates work so well in alleviating back pain, you may well ask? What makes it so good for you is that it looks at the potential structural imbalances that everyone develops as they age.

For you, it might be bad posture, lack of stability in your pelvis, muscles out of balance, no core muscle support ( a common cause of lower back pain), or even just not having a sense of body awareness. Having a regular routine with practice of Stott Pilates can bring dynamic changes and even elimination of all your back problems.

The first thing you will learn in a Pilates class is how to become aware of your own body. You’d be surprised to find out exactly how many people don’t even know that they aren’t aware of their own bodies! You need to understand and actually feel how everything inside of you (meaning your different body parts) stack up and are connected to each other.

With your body’s structure misaligned all manner of difficulties can occur. The thing is that once one part is out of alignment, your entire body compensates for that misalignment. Of course, it also leads to further misalignment.

One very common misalignment occurs in the pelvis. Many of us have the tendency to tuck or tilt our tailbones, generally without the knowledge that we are doing so. What happens when we do this is that you develop a weakness on one side of your body. This, in turn, causes the other side of your body to become very tight.

The way that Stott Pilates helps you deal with this imbalance is by letting you gently develop the inner core postural muscles of the abdomen. This causes your body to gradually flow itself back into optimum alignment.

It might be obvious to someone not used to Pilates exactly what a profound effect it can have on your over all feeling of well being. You might be tempted to give up in the beginning but don’t do it. Promise yourself that you will try Stott Pilates for long enough to feel it work. You may find your pain just vanishes overnight.

Top Three Pilates Exercises For Ab and Back Strengthening

July 13, 2009 by RLuve

Pilates focuses mainly on the core or abdominal muscles so it is perfect for working on the back and abs. One of the great things about Pilates is most people can do it on their own from home at any time. For actual physical therapy or more advanced training though you should consult a certified Pilates instructor that can guide and correct your movements to ensure you are doing everything the proper way. These exercises are good for working out on your own and will strengthen your back and abs.

The Hundred

This is a great one to tone the abs from the inside out because that is where everything originates for this exercise. Lay on your back and bring your legs into your chest. Place your arms at your side and relax for a minute taking in some deep breathes. Inhale and lift both your shoulder blades and arms off the ground about six inches. Extend your legs out at the same time. Pulse your arms five times as you exhale. Inhale, flip your palms over and pulse five more times. Repeat ten times for a total of one hundred pulses.

Teasing V-Sit

On your back lift your arms over your head and keep your legs out. All in one breath and movement raise your torso in one piece, and legs at the same time. Bring your arms over your head and bend at your waist at the hip section. Make your arms reach toward your toes so you end up in a “v” sit position. Hold for one breath. Exhale and roll down the vertebrates of your spine. Repeat as many times you can handle.

Chest Float Hold

Lie on your stomach with your forehead down, arms at your side and legs straight together. Inhale and lift your torso off the ground as you also lengthen your arms behind your back and stretch. Push your shoulders down and lengthen your neck keeping it in line with your spine. Hold and relax down. Repeat ten times.

Malibu Pilates Chair Review

malibu-pilates-chairIf you are looking around for a great piece of exercise equipment, consider the Malibu Pilates Chair. Like most machines of this type, the Malibu Pilates Chair is getting major attention from the lose weight crowd. And there is a good reason for this. Technology like this isn’t just about making your life easier, it’s about getting things done well. If you are concerned about weight loss, or even just staying in shape, you are going to need the correct strategy for doing so. You need to learn to work smarter, not just harder.

Click Here for the Malibu Pilates Chair.

Compared to the Pilates Reformer, which really is the top of the pile of quality exercise equipment, the Malibu Pilates Chair is much smaller and easier to manage. You’ll find it so lightweight that moving it out of the way is a snap. Like the Pilates Reformer, it has no problem giving you a full body work out. But what it won’t do is cost you an arm and a leg. At just under $350, it is very cost effective. The Reformer is more in the two to three thousand dollar range.

If you are looking for an entry point into the Pilates machine world, the Malibu Pilates Chair is a great one. As a novice, start out a little slower. Don’t worry you’ll soon be sweating with the best of them. And like I mentioned, it won’t take up too much room.

The Malibu chair makes your workout so much easier. Not that it does the work for you, but it will make your workout more effective. The way it is designed, as you progress in its program you will begin to watch the all those pounds melt away like magic.

I still remember my fat guy days. These Pilates machines were not so readily available to the common person. I had to spend hour upon grueling hour in the health club with all the gym rats and muscle heads. If I had one of these babies I could have been able to lose 20 pounds in 30 days…no problem.

I don’t want to sound all Pollyanna so let me list the things I didn’t like. I prefer a longer workout (don’t worry it comes with one) to the 20 minute one included on the free DVD with the Malibu Pilates Chair. That’s why I prefer the Body Sculpting Work Out that lasts a whole hour. It also comes with a free wall chart and custom plan for a diet. The one I tried at my local Pilates studio offered a better range of motion but the price of this one is lower.

From Amazon.com

This has easily become one of “our” best ever purchases. My husband bought this as a a birthday gift for me and now we have to fight some nights for who will use it first. I have taken private ($75 an hour session) and group reformer classes ($30 an hour session x5 in a class) locally, but needed to use more than once a week which is hard to do with the pricey costs. We bought the risers too, since I like being a little off the ground when exercising…” – K.Romero

Have used the Stott Reformer and another wood-based reformer. Love the Allegro reformer best. Its easily movable, easy to setup and feels more solidly build.” – Jeffrey Kok

Achieving Strong, Well-Toned Body with Pilates Machines

May 25, 2009 by RLuve

Pilates is a well-known exercise system that not only improves muscle strength, but also enhances one’s physical and mental conditions. It commonly involves two methods, both of which use the principle of resistance for toning and strengthening the body. The first method uses mats, and the other uses Pilates machines. There are three types of machines used in Pilates workouts. These are the Cadillac, reformer, and wunda chair.

Pilates Cadillac

The Pilates Cadillac consists of a padded platform that has a frame above it. Springs connect the frame to various bars or straps.

To use a Cadillac, sit on the platform and make sure your body is at the front of the roll-down bar. Also, your spine should be in a neutral position. Put your feet about 12 to 18 inches apart.

Lightly hold the roll-down bar. Then roll toward the bench. As you do this, pull your abdominal muscles tightly and slowly. Inhale once after your body has been aligned completely with the bench.

Afterwards, exhale while pulling your body up to the direction of the roll-down bar. See to it that you tightly pull in your abdominal muscles.

Reformer Machine

The Pilates reformer consists of a gliding platform attached by springs to a wooden or metal frame. The gliding platform can be pulled on ropes or pushed off from a non-moving bar. This machine uses the principle of resistance to make your abdominal muscles stronger.

How is it used for Pilates exercises? First, lie flat on the gliding platform and put your feet on the foot bar. Since the platform is near the foot bar, bend your knees at an angle of 90 degrees.

Next, stretch your legs to push the gliding platform away from the foot bar. As you do this, you must exhale and inhale gently. Also, bend your knees slowly and carefully.

Pilates Wunda Chair

This equipment is made up of a small padded platform with springs attached to a bar. Exercises using a wunda chair involve moving the bar forward as you stand or sit on the bench.

To use the wunda chair, begin with the basic moves as you sit on the bench. Then slowly increase your movements before you do harder exercises.

You can also use this Pilates machine by standing up on the bench. Put your right foot gently at the chair’s base. Bend your left knee and push the pedal down with your left foot. Once the pedal is lowered, raise it once more with your left leg.

Since you already know how to exercise with the above-mentioned Pilates machines, you can now begin to use them so that you can work out your muscles and improve your overall well being.

The Whole New World of Pilates Fitness

April 20, 2009 by RLuve

You are most probably grown tired of doing your routine exercises because you feel exhausted and tired after doing it. Instead of refreshing you and giving you some relaxation, your traditional exercises may have been stressing you more. If this is also happening to you and you want to have a new set of challenging exercises, the Pilates fitness program is here to answer all that you are looking for.

You see, you don’t have to suffer forever from those difficult to execute exercises. Pilates fitness is an alternative that is just perfect for a dynamic and adventurous person like you. There is one special individual to commend in this case and that is Joseph H. Pilates who was altogether a skin diver, skier, and a skilled gymnast. Before he became any of those though, he was a sickly child who fortunately had a lot of exercise motivation.

When he developed this program, he was thinking of the victims of the war who were injured and need physical training to be able to make the body function again. After the Pilates exercises were being noticed, he had his first students who happened to be some dancers who strongly believed that this program will help them improve their skills. His next students were some individuals who were physically challenged individuals, elderly people, health enthusiasts to movie actors and actresses.

Now, you may wonder what Pilates fitness is really all about. Pilates is consists of gradual and purposeful movements that is focused on the core muscles of the body. The core muscles include the ones on the abdomen and the back. The philosophy behind the Pilates fitness regime is that if one develops the muscles in the midsection of the body, then the rest will have the energy and stamina to take on more.

The program has a properly planned Pilates exercise which serves as the guiding rules of the participants that allow them to do the slow movements starting from the small-scale ones increasing to large-scales. This kind of program results to improved body condition and better control of joints all coordinated to generate the best physicality possible.

This Pilates exercises are good for those who are on their senior years since their body is aging and needs slow motion to reduce the effects of aging and to control the body to become more improved when it comes to good posture, coordination, flexibility, and strength. This fitness is also advisable to individuals who went through surgical operations.

Then again, the Pilates fitness and training needs more than the physical aspect of involvement. You also need to coordinate your mind with your body so that your movements would go in harmony. Just like doing yoga or meditation, you need to concentrate and meditate as you do the fitness program incorporated with proper breathing. You can do the fitness with exercise mats or with other Pilates fitness equipments available.

Pilates fitness program provides their own set of equipments for the training. Some of those are the reformer, the pedipull, the cadillac, the barrel and the chair. These equipments are specifically designed to allow the participant to concentrate more on the training to be able to generate the best results possible. Through this training and equipments, the muscles and body inward core work out in such a way that it also stretches the outward core.

There is no reason for you to use up all your energy doing the traditional exercises when there is a modern set of effective trainings that you can employ to develop your body muscles. The Pilates fitness training has planned it all for you, all you have to do is to use it and you will soon notice how your body become toned down and strengthened after the training.

Consumer Reviews

From Amazon.com

I hate exercising but know I need to and this is the first piece of equipment that I’ve ever enjoyed using. I love this machine. It is super easy to adjust and appropriate for all levels. I am 6 feet tall and have no problem fitting on the glideboard. I can do all of the exercises in the book and workout for about 45 min or so and not hate it. You can tell your muscles are changing, but it’s not so horrible or painful that you avoid it. I cannot say enough good things about this machine. I have bought everything and never used anything for longer than a day or two. I believe this is the only toning machine that anyone should ever need and it is a great price!! I love it!!
-  Tracy E. Guerrero

“The Pilates Power Gym was a wonderful find. Because of permanent injuries following an accident a few years ago I can’t do a lot of walking nor can I easily get up and down to do Pilates on the floor. This product is just high enough off the floor that I can easily get on and off it and change positions. It is well-made and being fully assembled is one of the selling points for me. I recommend this Reformer. It is a little heavy for me to move around right now, but I think the strength training exercises you can do with it will resolve that problem soon.”
- Kayell “Avid Reader”

From Buzzillions.com

“The Pilates Power Gym certainly is a compact weight training/Pilates tool. However, for many people it is to narrow and/or short. It is much better for upper body pulling motions than pushing motions. As a certified personal trainer and Pilates Instructor, I have found it is ok for anyone who is under 5′10″ and at a healthy weight to slightly overweight. It is limited on some of the Pilates exercises as it is not as long as a reformer and it also has a different style of cords for the resistance. Overall, it is ok for the money, but do not expect it to be a true reformer.”
- Jessica the Trainer

“I use it for pilates and it works great. The different resistance levels allow me to comfortably perform each position. I have a small frame and the bed of the gym is a little narrow so I have to be careful when positioning myself.”
- CLA the beginner

From HSN.com

My favorite workout! / Laura, CO
“This is a great machine! It’’s very smooth, super easy to use and you can work out your entire body. The great thing about this is that it only takes about 20 minutes a day and does not stress your body. I have five kids and no time to go and work out, this was my answer. I lost inches within 4 weeks! The machine stores away easily and in a small space. I highly recommend the Pilates Power Gym to men and women!”

Big Workout in a Small Package! / Lynn, SC
“This machine is excellent for targeting all of the muscles in your body. You really feel it when you”re done. The video is an excellent instructional for those who are new to pilates and want to make the most of working out on this machine. Definitely money well-spent!”

Pilates Power Gym Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Easy setup
  • Sturdy

Pilates Power Gym Cons

  • Noisy
  • Too Narrow

Average Consumer Rating: 4.5/5

The Bottom Line

For anyone wanting to accomplish a lot in a small space, the Pilates Power Gym is a good investment. The DVD workout video provides good instructions for doing the exercises. However, the small size may make it tough for taller or larger-build users.

Pilates Exercise Machine – Will Using One Get You Great Results?

March 16, 2009 by RLuve

Pilates Exercise MachinePilates is one of a few exercise methods that has really taken off over recent months and years. There seems to be a greater emphasis on getting (and staying) fit than in previous times, and as a result, people are always looking for better ways to stay in shape so that they can live their lives the way they want to. The question is, is a pilates exercise machine the perfect home exercise solution for you? While only you can ultimately answer that question, we can explore the reasons that Pilates is so popular, and discuss the benefits of a machine that follows the principles of Pilates.

One reason that Pilates is becoming more and more popular is that it is something new. People tend to get bored of the same old exercise routines, and why wouldn’t they? After all, you can only hop on the treadmill or head to the same aerobics class so many times before it starts to get a little stale. Pilates is a way to get fit without relying on the same boring type of workout that you have been doing.

Also, Pilates is a no-impact exercise method, which means that if your joints are sore or worn down by years of running, aerobics, or other activities, you can get some relief by doing Pilates. Best of all, even though there is no impact on your knees, feet, and other body parts, you will still get a wonderful workout that will get you into great shape.

What exactly can a machine do to help someone who is using Pilates to get in shape? You may be surprised at how natural and helpful a machine can be, actually. Many people are shocked at the idea of a machine that can be used for Pilates exercises, especially because Pilates seems to embody concepts that machines do not help you with usually, such as flexibility and fluid movements.

What a great machine will do for your workouts is intensify them by adding a bit of resistance to your movements. This will be helpful both for veterans of Pilates workouts who need a bit more challenge to their workouts, and also for those who are relatively new to Pilates, but are very fit and want to maintain that level of fitness. With a machine, the performance of exercises (and the challenge involved) can be tweaked to suit the performer his or herself.

If you think a Pilates exercise machine sounds right for you, check out some information on the internet to select the best one. Use reviews and consumer ratings as a guide, and do not forget to consider the value you are looking for, as well.
